Finding an RA Treatment That Fits You

A treatment's effectiveness depends on a lot more than just how it works. In fact, research has shown that the better a treatment fits your lifestyle, the better you'll be able to stick with it and the more effective it can be. So the question is: what type of treatment best suits the way you live your life with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?

Consider the method and frequency
Two aspects of treatment that have a significant impact on lifestyle are method and frequency. In terms of frequency, RA treatments are administered as often as daily and as little as every 6 months. Most people prefer to treat less often, because it gives them more time to focus on other parts of their lives.

As for method, most people would agree that a pill is the most convenient form of treatment. But many RA treatments, including all biologics, are given by injection or infusion. So there's a lot to consider. For example:
  • Infusions are given by a trained healthcare professional at a doctor's office, infusion center, or hospital
  • Infusions generally take longer than injections but are usually given less often
  • Injections are usually self-administered, so you must:
    • Get proper training and be physically able to inject yourself
    • Properly store the medicine while at home or away
    • Keep track of how much medicine you have stored, as well as how much you use with each injection
